The decision that matters

Best when a dated UW bulletin identifies the plant you want as opening, building or near peak.

Published 2026 historical observations are useful precedent, not current 2027 bloom status.

Your day on the ground

Plan the experience

Check the latest dated UW bloom bulletin before driving. Magnolia, flowering cherry, crabapple and lilac collections peak at different times—choose the plant named in the update.

Before leaving

Open the primary source and verify bloom stage, any gate or ticket requirements and the venue’s date-specific opening schedule.

At arrival

Enter from Seminole Highway and follow signs to the Visitor Center lots and Longenecker Horticultural Gardens. No vehicle through traffic across the Arboretum gate.

On site

Walk beneath a succession of flowering trees before reaching the lilac collection. This is best experienced slowly on foot, with labeled cultivars and changing fragrance around each corner.

Longenecker collection strategy

One garden, four different bloom clocks

Magnolias may flower in early to mid-April, while flowering cherries can follow different cultivar timelines. Crabapples often produce a later color wave, then lilacs extend the spring season across early, mid- and late cultivars.

UW’s spring bulletins explicitly separate these plant groups. Read the newest dated paragraph for the species you came to see; an April magnolia peak cannot be treated as evidence for May lilacs.

Go first to Longenecker Horticultural Gardens near the Visitor Center, then use the university’s garden map for other collections. Follow the official prohibition on pets, picnics, foraging and off-trail access.

What the UW Arboretum reported in spring 2026

April 15: early cherries were flowering but lilacs were only budding. April 28: crabapples were at peak, while roughly 20% of lilacs were open. May 4: around 30% of lilacs were flowering and crabapples were just past peak. May 14: early and mid-season lilacs were fading while later cultivars were opening.

This record shows why peak depends on the plant and the report date. These observations are strictly historical and do not assert conditions in 2027.
